Say it, don't spray it

Dudes, there are some Bloggers out there that are DOIN IT RIGHT.  They are laying it down and people are picking it up.

Let's have a show and tell:

Lance Haun of Your HR Guy wants you to SHUT UP ALREADY about the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA).  Sweet Mary Molasses, this is one post about talking about the EFCA that you have to read (ignore all others).

I don't need to tell you that times are tough.  There are layoffs and rumors of layoffs and schmucks on Craigslist wanting to hire HR generalists with 5+ years experience for a craptastic $16 an hour.  It's almost impossible to make a layoff painless, but Jay Sheperd of Gruntled Employees points his readers to a company that got creative and earned some karma.

Mark Stelzner of Inflexion Point got a wild hair up his rear end and decided since everyone is on Twitter all day anyway, we should use it to start helping people find jobs.  Job Angels was born on January 29th and already has 414 followers.  If you want to help someone find a job, or if you need help finding a job, follow Job Angels.  It's that simple and that brilliant.

Generation Xpert Suzanne Kart reminds us of a very simple tenet that cannot be embraced often enough, no matter where we work.  Stop acting like a monkey and start acting like a cheetah - even if the only thing you can control is your reaction to the (irksome) people you work with.

Laurie Ruettimann of Punk Rock HR pointed me to a fantastic shut-up-and-listen type post by Carmen Hudson of PeopleShark.  There is a lot of advice out there for job seekers, but Carmen cuts the crap and tells you what is real, what is garbage, and why.  It's very refreshing.

And last but certainlly not least, I bring you Kerry Sandberg Scott of Clue Wagon.  Kerry is new to the HR blogging world and I must say she has taken it by storm with her post, Meet the Blow it Out Your Ass Guy.  With a title like that, you know you're going to read it and love it.

It's funny Jenn, because you described *exactly* how I came up with JobAngels. If not for that wild hair, where would we be right now, hmm? Thought I had another wild one today, but alas, it was just a regular ole hair. :)

Thanks for the kind words Jenn. You're awesome! :)

It doesn't matter how much hyperbole or rationality people use to discuss EFCA. All that is aprt of the political/PR game.

Business and HR people in general are not paying enough attention to all the nuances of EFCA, and what it will mean to us when it passes.

Now is not the time to shut up.

It is the time to pay attention, learn and observe, see what is developing, and for HR professionals to do two things:

1) Help your company prepare for the new world that is coming be developing the right strategies, tactics and policies that will be required.

2) As a practicioner, sharpen those skills that have atrophied, or that you may never have had to use, like grievance handling, formal negotiation, arbitration, conflict resolution, mediation, etc.

Mark - The best ideas are always like that :)

Michael - Did you read Lance's post? It's pretty awesome.

I finally got both kids down for a nap, and I checked my blog statistics, and I was like, HOLY CRAP. Where are all these people coming from?

And it turns out they're coming from here. Thank you, Jenn...I've only been at this for a month, so I'm thrilled to hear that someone is actually reading it.

I am digging the JobAngels thing too. Such a great way to take care of each other, y'know?

Jenn

I read it. I agree with most of it, except the part about shutting up about it.

Last week in las Vegas, and in Miami the week before that I asked CEOs and HR Pro's what theyw ere doing about EFCA.

I got a shitload of blank stares. That is concerning, not matter your stance on the legislation and how much sturm und drang it deserves in the press.

Th coming changes in labor laws are one of those rare moments where HR be the leader and prove itself relevant, but not if people aren't even paying effin' attention.

Those of us who care about being professionals hear the noise. Lots of business people don't, believe it or not.

And regardless of how much we blab or say STFU, it still makes for good discussion!

OMG, I just discovered Bojangles and their biscuits are so good.

Jenn, put Bojangles on your list of things to do in life.

Zaxby's is good too, laurie if they have those in NC. They are in GA.

The sad thing is, in the Pacific Northwest, our idea of a biscuit is usually an English muffin. Well, that isn't entirely fair. There are some breakfast places and "Southern Cooking" type places that you can get your biscuit on, but I bet ours taste like hockey pucks compared to the ones you can get in the South.

Also: my cat Pan likes to try to make biscuits with his humongous, furry paws. It's v. cute.

The blow it out your ass guy story is one of the best I've read in a while. Very funny. Reminds me of doing HR in a smaller town.
