My inspiration is in hibernation
You know when you see something on the news or in the paper about unemployment and they always add, "These statistics don't include the unemployed people who have stopped looking for work" and you think to yourself, "who the heck STOPS LOOKING for work?"
Yeah, me too.
But you know what? I think *I've* finally stopped looking.
I get interviews, but not offers. I ask for meaningful feedback, but get brushed off. I try to network, but my mouth fills with sand and my shoes super glue themselves to the sidewalk. I try to pretend that I'm still interested in Human Resources and am fired up to make a change, but honestly....after looking for a job for nine months, I don't give a crap anymore.
And you know what? I'm sort of glad. I'm glad that I don't have to wake up everyday knowing that I have to go someplace broken and help to perpetuate a broken system with broken people in a broken economy in a broken country.
I can just sit here with my kittehs and watch the snow. We have around five inches of the white stuff in the Portland metro area right now. People are driving ATVs down the neighborhood streets.
Maybe I should set up a hot cocoa stand.

Jen, give yourself permission to take a break. Sit back, enjoy the holidays and hug your kittens. You have so much to offer. Keep blogging, writing, keeping your self out there - you are going to create (or find) an opportunity for yourself that is going to knock you own socks off. I can feel it!
Jen,
I enjoy your column and have learned so much from you over the past months since I too have been unemployed. As Lisa says, you do have so much to offer. I wish you the best in the New Year and want to thank you for your wise advice and for sharing your gift of knowledge and humor. Good things will come to you.
Aw shucks, thanks dudes.
(big hug!!!!!) You are awesome and don't ever think differently! You have a lot of people who support you! Though the idea of hibernation sounds really good when it gets this cold...
This is why the BLS has such a hard time reporting accurate employment numbers. It's people like you & me who think, "You know what, F this."
Also, you'll make more in cocoa than you will in HR. You are a connoisseur!
xxxooo
OMG the BLS is the biggest laughing stock. They compile bad data from poorly run state agencies and people write career articles using them as a source. It would be hysterical if it wasn't so damn sad.
