This Just In
There is absolutely nothing interesting in the latest HR Magazine from SHRM. Man I hate SHRM. I also hate the losers at my local chapter of SHRM. Man they are annoying. The only thing more annoying is the fact that there is also a regional chapter of SHRM - just in case you didn't get enough navy blazers and pumps at the local chapter meetings. BLEH!
$30 for a crappy hotel buffet style lunch, business cards that I just throw away (ok, you got me, I recycle them) and a speech by "national speaker" who wants to "learn ya'll on wut those gen Y'ers want in the werkplace and no it ain't hairspray and lotion in the ladies room!!"
Also: I am pretty sure my neighbors that recently got married are on the outs. The wife's stack of crushed beer cans in the recycling bin hasn't gotten taller in many weeks. I haven't seen her darting from her Tercel to the house in probably a month. It just sits there in front of the garage. He still comes and goes in his truck and looks a little rough around the edges (him, not the truck). Maybe he killed her and buried her in the backyard. Hmm. You heard it here first folks. If I don't post again in the next five days...just wait longer.
I'm going to go lock my door now.

I hate HR Magazine. It's soooo dry. If they want to know what Millennials want it's a better magazine. This one is just embarrassing. Aren't we supposed to be focusing on making things interesting? Imagine if the magazine was a training...
So I would assume that you would not recommend being a SHRM member? I've been thinking about it and my boss asked me to write a paragraph about the benefits, so I want to make sure I have all the facts first.
Dude, SHRM is sponsoring the debates on CNN. Just when you think you're dues are going to a stupid, content-free, glossy magazine, you can rest assured that your dues are going to a glossy & content-free debate.
Rachel - I'm only a member if my company pays for it. Actually, to tell you the truth, I value my PHR certification and know I can get all of my continuing ed through SHRM sponsored crapola so that is mainly why I'm a member. That and I like to stir things up on their message boards every once in awhile. They are good for fledgling HR folks (lots of samples online, articles, etc) but for old hags like me it is not usually worth the $$$.
Laurie - Now I hate them even more. Thanks!!
I have a stack of HR Magazines on my desk I will scan one of these days. Wench, you make a good point, when I was a newbie in HR I took a lot more interest in the magazine.
oh come on! i love those meetings where they get everyone all worked up on the need to have a thorough policy and plan for the bird flu! it gets us taken totally seriously when we take stuff like that back to our companies.
having a bad day wench?
aren't you on a job search? how's that going?
all the best!

U should read the UK version by the CIPD! It is so bad I worry that my intestines are going to jump out of my mouth and strangle me every time I read it! As for the research they undertake! It is generally terrible - written with a clear agenda in mind never mind the facts - drives me mad!
A friend sent me this blog link and I love it. I quit my last job after 2 years of beaurocracy and bullshit to move onto a job that is fun and rewarding...now that I know that there are a lot of other HR peeps out there who think SHRM is a scam/piece of garbage, but necessity for HR, I'm relieved. :) Regional membership? I giggled and then shredded it.
Deb - You crack me UP! I remember when they were all up in arms about the "coming pandemic(s)". I was like, whatever dudes. If there is a pandemic I plan on calling in sick just like everyone else so suck it.
Scott - CIPD sounds like a disease. As for your intestines...have you ever considered a career in special effects? :)
Erin - Welcome to the dark side! Thanks for stopping by.
The all time worst SHRM Magazine lead story (and there have been many) was the one that came out several years ago with a cross-dressing truck driver on the front cover-an all time low, even by SHRM's standards!
